  1. Summarize Suprasegmentals through a Powtoon video.
  2. comment on the forum at Gran Colombia´s platform.(virtual Campus)

  3. Segmental features are (generally) easy to determine in isolation.
    Single suprasegmental features may occur over a single segment or a sequence of segments.
    The length of a phone may depend on pragmatic reasons, phonetic reasons, or phonemic reasons.
    In some languages, changing the length of a phone can change a word’s meaning.
    All speakers have different average pitch.

  4. three thing to refer to suprasegmentals features :

    loudness: is intensity in each syllable in the sentences since it never produced with the same intensity.

    pitch: include intonation and tone ;refer is going up or down the intonation can be high , mid or low this would be the tone

    lenght :refers to when the sound of a vowel is long or short,This can be differentiated by the two points(:) that meaning the pronunciation the word is long

  5. Is a video very interesting, I understood that they are basic segments of the speech how the vowels and the consonants, but moreover they are other aditional features as the suprasegmentals features, and these are four:

    1.Loudness: is the intensity of the pronunciation, and we can understand that in a spoken utternace the syllables are never produced with the same intensity.

    2.Pich: is related with the intonation, and the pich is going up and down in a normal conversation.

    3.Length: this measure the duration of the vowels, syllable and utterance.

    4.Secondary Articulations: labialization, palatalization, velarization, pharyngealization.

  7. The video is very interesting and explanations are understandable and consistency.
    Loudness: is the characteristic of a sound that is primarily a psychological correlate of physical strength, a subjective measure, is often confused with objective measures of sound strength such as sound pressure.
    Pitch: is changing continually is going up and down, depends on the number of vibrations per second produced by the vocal cords.

  10. SUPRASEGMENTAL FEATURES ARE INTERESTING BECAUSE THESTRESS ON WORDS ARE THE SENCE OF THE SPEECH. THE PTCH LEVEL GO UP AND DOWN ARE PRODUCED FOR THE FORCE OF INTONATION, THAT DESCRIBE THE SENCES AS A MELODY. IT'S VERY CLEAR TO UNDERSTAND

    1. Those suprasegmentals are very usefull for start to talk real english, it's important to know the stress marks on loudness part, how it decreasse and increasse the stress on syllabes, changing to frenquency too and expressing emotion

  11. The explanation in the video is very clear, I understood the meaning and the function of loudness, pitch, length and secundary articulation.

    LOUDNESS: is the intonation, the way how we pronounce the word in the language
    PITCH: it mix the tone, the intonation and the frecuency of the pronunciation
    LENGTH: it depends of the duration of the word, if it is short or long.
    SECONDARY ARTICULATION: in here we have labialization, palatalization, velarization and pharyngealization.

  13. HI, The characteristics of the segments (i.e. individual sounds) of speech: place and manner of articulation and voicing for consonants; tongue height and advancement, lip rounding, and tenseness for vowels.
    The characteristics of supra-segmental of speech: speech sounds may also have length, intonation, tone, and stress.
    LENGH:
    Some speech sounds are inherently longer than others. for instance:
    high vowels are shorter than low vowel;
    voiceless consonants are longer than voiced consonants.
    INTONATION:
    The pattern of rises and falls in pitch across a stretch of speech such as a sentence.
    The pitch = highness or lowness
    TONE
    With respect to the syllables in a word the pitch can make a different in the word’s meaning

  14. Hi teacher. The video that you linked was about in general talking about suprasegmental features that explain features of:

    -Loudness: referring to the intensity of the syllables because they don’t have the same intensity (related with stress in each case)
    -Pitch: that is related with the frequency and how the people pronounce the words, Pitch always will increase and decrease (intonation).
    -Length: that talks about the duration of vowels, syllables and utterance according to its position on the sentence.
    -Secondary Articulation: in this case explain many articulations to produce sounds in English speech (labialization, palatalization, velarization and pharyngealization).
    Also explained about the co-articulations (dental, fronting, etc.)

  17. well teacher, I understood that this video was a review about the some topics that we were looking during the process in the class, since is very important know that in the stress increase respiratory activities when there are many expressions at moment to talk about something.
    the pitch is the frequency as we say the things
    length is the duration acording to the vowel length, syllable length,utterance length, where give knowledge about the forms of expressions acording at especific time.

    For another part is very interesting and important remember the importance that this topics give in ours knowledge every day because in a future we use in the work.

  20. It's a short video... but it's also very clear, i understand the functions and the importance of Suprasegmental phonology.

    Suprasegmental phonology is concerned with other aspects of phonology, such as PITCH, LOUDNESS, LENGTH and the SECONDARY ARTICULATION.


    PITCH: That include intonation and tone; Refers that the intonation can be high , mid or low , and this would be the tone

    LOUDNESS: It’s about the intensity of the pronunciation, and that we can understand it in a spoken utterance. Also explain that the syllables are never produced with the same intensity.

    LENGTH: It’s about the duration of sound with vowels, syllables and utterance according to the position of each one on the sentence.

    SECONDARY ARTICULATION: in the video there is an explanation about some articulations in order to produce sounds in English speech. (labialization, palatalization, velarization and pharyngealization).

    loudness (intensity): is the intensity with which the sound of each word according to the syllables containing the phrase occurs.

Well in the video i saw many things very important, like the analysis of the characteristics of the suprasegmentals and his physical counter parts, for example, loudness with the counterpart intensity, measured in decibels, pitch and the frequency measured in Hz something important in pitch is in the video he talks about the speech were the pitch is changing continuously, length with the physical counterpart duration measured in secs and finally the articulation to produce the suprasegmentals(labialization, palatalization, velarization and pharyngealization).

  33. According to the video Suprasegmental Features have some features as it says, it works with those:
    • Loudness which is the (intensity) and it´s measure in (DB); and in which you read through phonetic symbols like the example I n which the stress is high in some parts of the sentence.
    • Pitch which is the (frequency) and it´s measure in (Hz); and it changed constantly, going up and down as in the next example:

    Ex: I sat by the window reading a book.
    The Phonetic Analysis of Pitch: The intonation of a language can be describes as it´s melody. And it has some parts into the body of the sentences:
     Nucleus: words into the nucleus tongue. The middle of the sentence.
     Head: the beginning of the sentence.
     Tail: The finish of the sentence.
    • Length which is the (duration) and it´s measure in (sec). It also is divided in three parts:
     Vowel length: si:t - sIt
     Syllable length: jes - je:::s
     Utterance length: tha changing of the “tempo” of an utterance may increase or decrease its character.
    • Secondary Articulation: It can be:
     Labialization: often used in child-directed speech (“baby talk”).
     Palatalization
     Velarization
     Pharyngealization
    Those are ways to use to use the language according to the phonetic system as the tool to use or create the sound.
    Co- Articulation divides in two parts for develop the sound according also with our phonetic sysem:
     Fronting - Retracting
     Dental
    Don´t mix Co-Articulation with Secondary Articulation.
    All this about Suprasegmental Features is a function in a particular language.

  39. This video is quite an English phonetics class. We can clearly see an explanation about the phenomenon of speaking. It is said that it has lots of important parts such as vowels, consonants, which form words and at the same time, phrases within speech. Different aspects of speech sounds are explained as well as the suprasegmental features that are loudness, pitch (where frequency and intonation play roles) and length which is measured in seconds. When we speak, we may realize that there are stressed syllables and at the same time that there are some weaker or stronger than others. Pitch level is really important when we talk about phonetic analysis of speech. Something I really liked was: "The intonation of a language can be described as its melody" besides, is the fact of knowing that Length of sounds is variable depending on the words we are saying and of course what we mean to say. This analysis looks forward to work on different linguistic porpuses. Something that expresses lack of interest, lack of emotion, are short vowells in used expressions. Finally we've got to know the importance of lips and tongue position in order to make different sounds.

I understand the videos, the different examples where the sections of the words were separated in its intonation in USA and British englis its changes, sections of the words and intonation from de other people from de another countries is very interesting because do it a comparison with the original pronuntiation of the english lenguage and its similitude with their pronuntiation and the segment of the words of the videos.

  44. Hi, the man on the video explains some important supragmentals features of the phonetic, such as:

    -Loudness which is responsible of the physical counterpart intensity where the syllables don't produced of the same way, that syllables are produced when the respiratory activity increases and combine each other.

    -Pitch is responsible of frequency because this supragmental feature changes constanlty, so it's referred as a intonation for the melody.

    -Length has a variety of linguistic purposes such as vowel lenght where we can differentiate making a combination, in syllable lenght, we can join it through syllables but it depends of the emotion that give it and utterance lenght where the time changes depending on the increase or decrease.

    After these supragmentals features, there are others which are responsibles of labialization, palatalization and pharyngealization where it must not be mixied with the co-articulation.

    It is about intensity of the sounds and it is calculated by decibels, not all the syllables has the same intensity, it depends of the quantity of the increase of the respiratory activity.

    Pitch.
    It is about frequency and his measure is by hertz, it is changing continuously, it is going up and down in a conversation all the time and like we saw before it is could be "rise, fall or fall-rise".

    Length.
    Duration, his normally measure is in seconds, it could a variation wich depends of the language or the emotion of the speaker, for example: yes /jes/ or yes /je:::s/.

    Secondary Articulation.
    The most important part, could be.
    —Labialization, often used when you talk like a baby.
    —Palatalization.
    —Velarization. (both like a "legüi sopa")
    —Pharyngealization, Like in arabic languages.
